  • Deputy Head to run London Marathon with six other Emus!

    Published 15/04/24

Tom Brown, Deputy Head at Woodlands Meed College, is aiming to break his previous record of running as a Banana in Pyjama in 2019, for a faster group run of 7 Emus all running in costume at this year’s TCS London Marathon.

Seven emus are taking on the London Marathon on Sunday 21st April to raise money to help fund sporting opportunities and experiences for children and young people with learning, social, physical and communication disabilities at Woodlands Meed School & College in Burgess Hill, West Sussex.

Tom made headlines in 2019 when he ran the London Marathon in a banana in pyjama costume with running pal Andy.  This year, he will be joined by Andy and five other friends dressed in emu costumes who are keen to support Tom in his fundraising efforts.

The 7-strong team will be individually dressed as “emu riders’ and are aiming to break the ‘bananas’ previous record of 3 hours 39 minutes.  They’ve recently been spotted taking part in Hove Seafront Park Run and you may well have seen them out and about locally on training runs!

The Emu’s are hoping to raise lots of money for resources and opportunities to enhance the student’s time at Woodlands Meed, with a special focus on giving the students a summer of sporting experiences - to give the children and young people as many opportunities to try out sporting and physical challenges that ordinarily they might not get a chance to do.

Tom said he was feeling “unbelievably excited” ahead of this year’s marathon.

“I am incredibly excited about this year’s London Marathon.  We had such an unbelievable experience last time as the bananas, I can’t wait to unleash the emus on to the course!  The atmosphere and the crowd at the London Marathon is just incredible and I feel really lucky to be able to run to raise money for the inspiring students I teach at Woodlands Meed.’

As well as running the London Marathon, Tom will also be undertaking a ‘Tomathon’ later in the week at Woodlands Meed on 26 April, where every student at Woodlands Meed will join Tom to run, walk or wheel to be part of the marathon event and help raise money for the sporting activities.

  • Amazing Students Astound us at Albion Wheelchair Festival!

    Published 26/03/24

On Monday 25th March, 14 of our students from both College and School represented Woodlands Meed at the annual wheelchair football festival.

Our students had so much fun; participating in skills, games and challenges such as IT, tag, races, relays, penalty shoot outs and finally a football tournament!  Everyone (staff included!) fully embraced all the activities and although very competitive, everyone displayed great sportsmanship and I am pleased to say that there were no injuries to report!  All the students were rewarded with medals from Albion in the Community in recognition of their effort and the skills on show.

We are very proud of all of you; some made their competitive debuts today, whilst others demonstrated that they have continued to develop their football skills since last year and are now far more confident; CONGRATULATIONS!

  • WM Girls show who Rules the World with Impressive Cup debut!

    Published 19/03/24

On Monday 18th March, it was the turn of our female students’ to represent Woodlands Meed in The Albion Cup.  Many were making their full debuts, as students from both our School and College sites joined forces to put on a fantastic show of teamwork, togetherness, and skill!

Exciting attacking play and clinical finishing, combined with tough tackling, expert goalkeeping and a miserly defence resulted in a very successful tournament for our inspiring girls.  Winning three, drawing two, and losing just two of their 7 games; scoring 12 and only conceding 5 goals are very impressive statistics for any team in The Albion Cup, let alone a team who were playing together for the first time!  Special mentions go to Precious; who was our top goal scorer with 7 (including a hat trick against Lindfield!), and Heidi who was solid and so reliable in goal, the highlight being a fantastic penalty save!

Massive congratulations to all 8 of you, we are so very proud of you all!

    Our Inspirational Squad:

Evie B, Precious H, Holly MF, Rosie MF, Megan S, Keira A, Nia S, Heidi P

  • KS3s Terrific Table Cricketers do Themselves Proud at County Ground Hove

    Published 06/03/24

On Friday 1st March, our students attended the annual Lord Taverners’ table cricket competition at The County Ground in Hove, home of Sussex Sharks.  Our table-cricketers have been receiving training from Sussex Cricket Coach Matt Cutlass, and our students were determined to put into practice what they had learnt.  Our students competed against teams from Angmering, Shoreham and our very own College site.  We played three highly competitive matches, and despite all finishing in narrow defeats, our students demonstrated some fantastic cricket throughout and were extremely unlucky to not secure the results that their effort and skill deserved.

We are so proud of our students who all thoroughly enjoyed the event and represented the school with distinction.

    Special mentions go to:

Grace for her exceptional batting and bowling!

Alfie S for his excellent captaincy and being a fantastic role model for all!

Deven for showing great adaptability; participating fully in her first ever tournament!

  • Football Fever Returns as both School and College show off their Skills at Local Tournament

    Published 07/02/24

On Monday 5th February, 13 students from our school and college sites travelled to The Triangle to represent Woodlands Meed in the annual year 9, 10, 11 football tournament.  We were able to field two teams with one representing each site.  Our school site won one game and lost three in the group stage, with Kaden and Tom getting on the scoresheet, whilst our college site drew two and lost two in their opening four fixtures.

Unfortunately, neither of the teams made it through to the knockout stages, but we still played a friendly where we mixed all the school and college teams together. This game ended 2-2 with Kaden scoring 2 great goals. The skill level was high, so it was a difficult tournament, but all of our students represented Woodlands Meed amazingly and were brilliant, both on and off the pitch.  There were 2 fair play awards that were handed out from the Brighton Foundation for ongoing fair play and great teamwork throughout. These were given to Olly from the school site and Taylor from the college site.  Congratulations!

On another note, the school and college site both had assistant managers to help us.  These were scholars from the Brighton Academy who were U18/U23 players.  They were helping and giving tips and advice to help our teams.  Our students were fantastic; making them feel very welcome and they definitely enjoyed their company.

All the boys were a credit to the school and college, and they enjoyed a fun day out!

    Our two squads:

School: Kaden, Charlie, James, Bobby, Olly, Harry Mc and Tom F

College: Quinn, Leon, Taylor, Harri, Josh D and Tyler

Congratulations, we are very proud of you all, and we are especially proud of the sportsmanship you showed towards each other and also the other schools.  Well done!

    Published 13/10/23

On Tuesday the 10th October, Fox Class travelled the short distance to The Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath for a Get Active event organised by Active Sussex.

For many of the students, this was their first time representing Woodlands Meed and they all did the school proud!  Activities included familiar sports such as squash and cricket, but this event also gave students the opportunity to try more unusual sports such as martial arts, pop-steps and pickleball!  Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed trying all the different activities; here is some pupil voice about the event…

‘I liked learning how to bowl in cricket’

‘I like all the songs and dancing’

    ‘I loved the martial arts!’

    ‘I liked playing tennis’

A member of staff who works at The Dolphin Leisure Centre also reported back to us to say how ‘amazing’ our students were, how they were ‘all engaged’ in the event and they all participated fully and with ‘great enthusiasm'!

  • Woodlands Meed achieved an Artsmark Gold Award!

    Published 06/10/23

Woodlands Meed has been awarded an Artsmark Gold Award. Huge Congratulations go to the Performing Arts team and all our staff and pupils for this fantastic achievement!

Woodlands Meed received this feedback from the Assessors -

'Woodlands Meed have used this Artsmark journey to develop an ethos of everyday arts across your two sites. You added an Artsmark tag to Seesaw your online learning journal to track arts activity across all subjects to ensure arts activity was an everyday part of school experience. You have rewritten your performing arts plans with a detailed 4 to 19 strategy in place and created a new learning skills strategy with creativity as a core skill. You ran an arts festival and a performance at a local theatre that involved every member of staff and all students. You have ensured that your arts curriculum has good representation of gender and artists who are disabled and you employed learning disabled arts leaders for your arts festival. You have drawn attention to the creative and cultural industries as career choices through assemblies that focus on arts careers. Children and young people enjoy a broad arts and cultural offer. Students have worked with another college on arts activities. You work with a wide range of arts organisations including Royal Opera House, Orpheus Centre, M&M Theatre and Second Hand Dance. You worked through your School Council to gain feedback on students creative interests and you offer Arts Award. You have Student Arts Leaders who have delivered workshops in a local primary school. Are there ways you can further develop the voice of all your pupils so they actively contribute to the planning and delivery of authentic arts, cultural and creative experiences and take ownership of their engagement and personal progression within the arts? You have set up a SEN arts group between three SEN Schools and are sharing best practice and CPD. You offer CPD to your staff provided by artists and arts organisations including the Royal Opera House and local dance professionals. It would be good to hear more about how this CPD and your other work is working towards a shared understanding of what quality in the arts and cultural curriculum means, and how the arts inform your whole school pedagogy. You have plans to run a national SEN conference and we look forward to hearing about the impact of this on other settings and how it supports them to develop their own vision for arts and culture.'

  • A Day at the Races for Woodlands Meed

    Published 27/09/23

Last week the whole of year 9 from Woodlands Meed took part in a race day experience with the charity "Racing to School". They were able to learn about maths in a fun and functional way using information provided about racing horses, weighing jockeys and even watching two races! The students (and staff) had a thoroughly enjoyable time and they even had a run down the final furlong. The students even learned about the history of this type of measurement and how and why it is still used in racing today. Racing to School is an education charity that aims to inspire young minds through the provision of free, interactive, and healthy outdoor educational events for schools, staged at a variety of racing venues. The charity works with young people with special educational needs and over one third of our output is targeted to engage those from inner city, rural and deprived areas. The charities staff have a range of industry backgrounds including former jockeys who have retrained to develop their second careers, and their experience is invaluable as the charity introduces horseracing as an accessible sport to young people.
