  • Three Superb School Site Sports Days Celebrate Students’ achievements in front of friends and families

    Published 29/06/23

On Monday 26th June, our secondary students participated in the annual KS3 sports’ day.  Students competed in events such as high jump, sprint, target throw, archery and of course, the dressing up race!  Everyone did so well; trying to achieve personal bests as they threw further, jumped higher and ran faster!

The parents and families even got involved and showed their competitive spirit!!

We were so proud of all our students, but there were some special awards for those who achieved the most points, or gave their all and displayed fantastic team spirit.  Here are our winners:

    Ocean: Heidi, Mia

River: Tianna, Alfie R, Thomas, Nicola

Glacier: Grace, Amir, Alfie So, Josh

Desert: Alfie S, Ellie, Oli, Izzy

    Waterfall: Amayah, Kaden, Rosie, Indi

    Mountain: Taylor, Harri,    Leon, Keira

    Lake: Iris, Stanley, Ryan, Sayf

A big thank you to the amazing sports’ leaders from BH Academy for running the station; you were brilliant with our young people!

On Tuesday the 27th June, our students with more complex needs participated in their festival themed sports’ day.  Do not be fooled though, our students (and staff!) were just as competitive as our key stage three students yesterday!  Events included bubble wrap races, water squirter targets, Jolf, giant skittles and the firm favourite wheelchair football match and penalties!

Our families were also treated to refreshments which we shared together before we were all given medals to show how well we had done!

Thank you to our year 9 sports’ leaders for helping on the day!

We all had a great morning exploring all the different activities!

On Wednesday the 28th June, our primary students competed in our third and final sports’ day.  Students threw javelins, jumped over high jumps, ran in races, and also got dressed up (yes I am referring to the race, although our students did look great in their sporting attire!) as they completed a carousel of activities in their classes.

All students were awarded a medal as everyone participated with great enthusiasm, tried their best and were very supportive of one another!

Special mention to Anna Hull and The FOWM for the fantastic refreshments that were on offer during all three mornings. They were all greatly received!

Congratulations, and thank you to everyone who helped make our three sports’ days the successes they were!

  • Outstanding Careers Fair and Quality in Careers Standard Award for Woodlands Meed

    Published 28/06/23
Woodlands Meed have recently been awarded the prestigious ‘Quality in Careers Standard’ Award

Mims Davis joined the Meeds Job Club team, Careers Governors, Students and Head Teacher, Adam Rowland recently to celebrate Woodlands Meed School and College having successfully completed and achieved the Quality in Careers Standard. Mims unveiled the new plaque that will be proudly displayed at the College. She said of the achievement - ‘Through Investor in Careers Woodlands Meed are now full holders of the award for the next three years! Following a rigorous and detailed assessment process through Investors in Careers, Woodlands Meed School and College has been accredited as “Fully meeting all the accreditation criteria, incorporating the Gatsby Benchmarks and are now full holders of the award for the next three years. This is an amazing achievement and I congratulate you all on all for your hard work and commitment to improving the employment outcomes for not just your own students but all those locally with SEN’

Nola Bennett Deputy Head Teacher and Careers Lead at Woodlands Meed said, ‘Only 558 English secondary schools and colleges hold the award - so it makes it particularly special that the work, enthusiasm and commitment the Meeds Job Club have put into this has been acknowledged.’

The Meeds Job Club at Woodlands Meed works to make connections with employers to help support both students and employers to work together. Drawing on expertise from local support agencies like the Coast to Capitol SEND Careers Hub along with feedback from working parties including parents, carers, current and alumni students.

Courtney has been an integral part of the MJC Student Voice Steering Group, giving her feedback and opinion on the plans the MJC has, from a student perspective. Courtney enjoyed an experience of the workplace at local Vineyard Ridgeview picking grapes and learning how wine is made. She also volunteers as one of our college librarians.

Tyler took part in a group Computing work experience with Chambers and Partners and impressed them so much he is now doing a one day placement as a Junior Tester for them, working remotely from the MJC office. Ex Woodlands Meed student Elliot, who works for Chambers and Partners full time since leaving WM, has been acting as a mentor.

Annabelle has completed work experience as a classroom assistant at the WM school site and is now doing an external placement with Little Explorers Nursery in Burgess Hill. Annabelle is also a valued member of the MJC Student Voice Steering Group.

All three played a vital role in us achieving the Quality in Careers award. They were asked lots of questions by the assessor and were brilliant and giving examples of how the Woodlands Meed Careers Programme delivered by the MJC has supported them to raise their aspirations and experience the world of work. They all also attended the Careers and Transition Fair earlier this year.

Careers and Transition Fair welcomes over 250 young people with SEND

The recent Careers and Transition Fair in partnership with Coast to Capitol SEND Careers Hub, held earlier this year, is another example of how Woodlands Meed are supporting their pupils and local young people with SEND to engage with the employers. Over 250 pupils attended from across the SEND Careers Hub.

The event brought together local employers, day services, transitional services and further education settings with a passion for recognising the potential of people with SEND in the world of work and the value of giving young people an opportunity to make a valued contribution to society.

Woodlands Meed is a generic special needs school and college in West Sussex. The students have a very broad range of special needs and disabilities. Many of the students find new and unfamiliar environments and people challenging and the SEND Careers and Transition Fair helped provide a highly supportive space to experience meaningful encounters with employers and transitional organisations to engage and inspire.

The feedback from those who attended described the event as a great success and incredibly valuable in giving young people a chance to gain a detailed insight into work possibilities and of the future opportunities available. The businesses who attended felt it also provided local employers with an insight into working with young people with SEND. One exhibitor commented, ‘the students were great and many were very curious, it was great to be able to inspire young minds’

The students also provided positive feedback ‘it was good, and I got to see how many different options there were for me’

Coast to Capital Careers Hub brings together schools, colleges, employers, and apprenticeship providers across East Surrey, West Sussex, Brighton and Hove. The goal is to make it easier for schools and colleges to improve how they prepare all young people for their next steps. We drive progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks by enabling schools and colleges and their Careers Leaders to access training and support and to collaborate in a focused way, bringing together best practice and local labour market insight.

Joe Smith, SEND Enterprise Co Ordinator said ‘We were thrilled to collaborate with Woodlands Meed for our SEND Careers Fair event. We also extended invitations to nine other schools and colleges in the region and got great initial feedback from staff and students on the event. With this success, we hope this can be an annual event and invite even more provisions to the next event. ‘

If you are a business and are interested in finding out more, we are currently in search of business volunteers to join us as Enterprise Advisors. This presents a fantastic opportunity to volunteer for an hour every month, working closely with the Senior Leadership Team in these provisions to assist them in creating pathways for their students either virtually or in person.

Giving pupils exposure to employers and workplaces allows them to meet role models and build aspirations and inspiration around future pathways, jobs and opportunities. For young people, engaging with employers and experiencing workplaces is key; never underestimate the positive influence you can have on young people.

  • Woodlands Meed Students get ‘Out on the Water’

    Published 22/06/23

A lucky group of students from Woodlands Meed College were invited to participate in a sailing event at Chichester Yacht club recently. The event, run by "Kids out on the water" Rotary clubs, proved to be an exciting nautical adventure for all those involved. The students went on motorboats and sail boats out into the harbour, anchored, ate lunch and then returned to shore. The students all enjoyed their day and would like to say thank you to the volunteers who gave up their time to give them this wonderful experience.

Rotary ‘Kids Out on the Water 2023’ took 71 children in total from special need schools in the South East out on the water in Chichester Harbour in 25 private yachts recently. The children came from 7 different schools in Hampshire and West Sussex from as far away as Woodlands Meed in Burgess Hill and Horsham. The boats departed from Hayling Island, Chichester Marina and Itchener to meet up for lunch at East Head. The RNLI arrived on their boat at lunch time to give a demonstration which was greatly appreciated by the children and boat owners alike. The weather was perfect for the day with light winds an intermittent sun.

The event is now in its 40th year and is arranged by Havant Rotary, Heathfield, Chichester Priory and Chichester Harbour. This is an event that gives enormous pleasure to many children who would not normally have the opportunity to get out on the water. Thanks to all involved and the wonderful boat owners who gave up their free time to make this happen. It was a memorable day for all concerned.

  • Soccer Aid 2023! School Site don their football shirts as entire site compete in Marathon Charity Football Match

    Published 13/06/23

On Friday the 9th June, everyone at the school site joined together to participate in our marathon football match to raise funds for Soccer Aid.  Students (and staff!) were encouraged to wear their favourite football shirts with representatives from all classes participating.

It was a great spectacle with our wheelchair users kicking off the match, and although it was in aid of charity, it was highly competitive with a few tackles that made some of us wince on more than one occasion!

As other classes were introduced, the goals kept on flowing, and we were all very impressed with the level of football on show.  Of particular note was the part of the match when we had three classes on the pitch which equated to almost 40 students, but they all did incredibly well, and it was expertly refereed by Lou!

It was a fantastic day, and in the end, a very close match with the blues eventually winning by a single solitary goal!  Well done to everyone involved!

During the half-time break, we held three penalty shoot-outs; one for our students in wheelchairs, one for primary and one for Key Stage 3.

The goalies for the penalty shoot-outs were:

    • Ethan and Seren
    • Katie T
    • Martin W

Once again it was very competitive and we witnessed some truly fantastic penalties (The England National team could learn a few things from our students!).  Liv and Lou were on hand to keep score.  This was very   important as the winners were to be awarded with a brand new football each!

    And the winners were:

    KS3: Tianna

    Primary: Bruno

Congratulations to everyone who took part, it really was a fantastic whole school event, well done!

The Acumen People Awards set out to recognise and showcase 7 – 17 year olds within the local community who have gone above and beyond and had a positive impact on the lives around them and the School of the Year Award recognises a school that has demonstrated excellence in academics, extracurricular, and/or community involvement.

Other awards included, Fundraiser of the Year, Bravery Award, Best Friend of the Year, Sibling of the Year, Young Carer Award and Sporting Achievement Award.

Our College House Captains, Luke, Tara and Jess attended the Awards to represent Woodlands Meed, along with Deputy Head Teacher Nola Bennett and Fundraiser Anna Hull. The students represented Woodlands Meed brilliantly and we all enjoyed a fantastic evening.

The students particularly enjoyed hearing from Penina Shepherd, Acumen’s CEO and founder, who gave a heartening and motivating and talk about why she decided to set up Acumen. She shared how facing fear and not being afraid to try new things and think differently, helped her achieve her goals. Penina’s talk and seeing and hearing about the other nominees and winners was inspirational and very moving and we all felt in awe of the remarkable people we met and the amazing things that go on in our community.

  • Play on the Pitch: Fantastic Footballers, Finalists in First Ever Amex Tournament!

    Published 06/06/23

Just before half term on Friday 26th May, 12 students from KS3 and KS4, travelled to the home of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, The Amex, to play in an invitational tournament!  As the name suggests, the students actually got to play on the Amex pitch, and boy they didn’t disappoint!!!

Our superstars performed brilliantly from the start, earning a very impressive point after a 1-1 draw against a very good Downsview, thanks to a goal from Bobby and some very committed defending!  In our second game, we started very positively against Hill Park, and went close many times before Kaden found the back of the net, earning us a 1-0 victory.  This meant a win in our final group match would guarantee us a place in the final.  It was another close game with chances at both ends, but then Tyler picked up the ball and hit it beautifully into the bottom corner.  Some expert teamwork and collective defending ensured we saw this game out.

In the final, we faced Downsview who we had drawn with earlier in the tournament.  It was another tough game and despite our students giving everything, we eventually lost 2-0.  However, this must not take away how amazing our students were both on and off the pitch!!! They really were a true credit to the school!  How many people can say they’ve played on The Amex pitch? How many people can say they’ve scored on The Amex pitch?  How many people can say earnt their place in a final on The Amex pitch?  How many people can say they’ve played in a final on the Amex pitch?  The answer is not many, so a massive well done to all you!!!
