Governor Profiles

 

Adam Rowland

Adam was appointed Headteacher of Woodlands Meed in September 2015. He was previously a governor at St. John’s, a school and residential provision for students aged  5 - 24 years in Brighton. He has a young family who keep him very busy at weekends and in his spare time enjoys outdoor activities.

Simon Virgo

Simon was elected as a parent governor in September 2013.  He is Chair of Governors, the Health & Safety Governor, Whistle Blowing Governor and is Chair of the Premises Health and Safety Committee.  In the past, he has chaired the Learning and Wellbeing Committee as well as being governor for KS4, KS5 and the college site. 

Simon has 2 children (now adults) with ASD & learning disabilities, both of whom attended Woodlands Meed / Newick House.

Simon has worked for 25 years for blue-chip companies in the financial services sector.  He has a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and Chartered Institute of Marketing Qualifications. 

He currently owns a property business, including a business centre in Burgess Hill and is a company director.

Miriam Owen

Miriam has been a school governor since 2012, and at Newick House school prior to that. Her designated role is as Safeguarding Lead, and also Head Teacher performance review panel.

Miriam's professional qualifications are in HR, learning and development, working in both private and public sectors.  She also has first-hand experience of children with ASD, severe learning difficulties and limited communication. She was chair for Kangaroos Mid Sussex, and volunteered for this charity offering social clubs for SEN people. 

Rose Griffiths

Rose was co-opted as a governor in January 2019. She is retired, having been in the post-16 education sector for 36 years in open access colleges in both Essex and West Sussex. She has been a classroom volunteer at Woodlands Meed since 2013.Rose is an active committee member and team captain of Burgess Hill Hockey Club.  She is also Vice Chair of "Neighbourly Care" -  a local organisation which helps the elderly and housebound.

Liz Hutty

Liz is one of two staff governors. Liz began teaching at Woodlands Meed in 2018.  In her 40s, she retrained as a Special Needs teacher, having spent over 20 years working with disadvantaged young people.  She spends her spare time with her family and dog.  She enjoys baking, reading and walks along the beach.

Bill Hatton

Bill was co-opted as a governor in September 2018. He is a retired Chartered Town Planner with 40 years experience in Local Government. He was District Planning Officer for Mid Sussex for 14 years and Chief Executive of Mid Sussex District Council for 8 years. He was a governor of Downlands Community School for 20 years. He is a member of the Burgess Hill Rotary Club and also of Hassocks Parish Council of which he was chairman for 5 years. He currently chairs the Parish Councils Neighbourhood Planning Working Group. He loves the countryside and going for long walks.  He also goes to the gym and swims to try to keep relatively fit.

Deborah Scott

Debs was co-opted as a staff governor in October 2022.  

Matt Stuart

Matt was appointed a parent governor in December 2020. He has run his own travel business for 20+ years since 1998, then moving his family and business overseas for 6 years in 2012.  Returning to settle back in Haywards Heath in 2019, Matt has two children, one of whom has ASD and attends Woodlands Meed


 

Sue Hawkes

Sue brings together her artistic skills and SEND teaching knowledge to the governing board. She began her career as an art editor for women’s magazines and then had her own publishing business. 

After having three children, she changed career to specialise in SEND and attachment difficulties, as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Designated Champion for adopted and children in care. She has been teaching small group literacy intervention lessons for the last 20 years. 

Sue has now retired and enjoys combining her passions for art and nature by garden designing. 

Shafique Barabhuiya

Shafique is a parent governor.
