Next Steps

Every pupil at Woodlands Meed has an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan). As well as an academic curriculum focused on learning at an appropriate level, we also ensure our curriculum includes personal progress targets, working towards meeting EHCP outcomes. These can vary between pupils contingent on need, but tend to focus on social skills, communication, regulation, independence and life skills.

To ensure all pupils make progress against their EHCP outcomes, we set Short-Term Targets every year during the pupil’s Annual Review meeting, in line with the Long-Term targets identified in the EHCP. On a termly basis, we set each pupil 4 Next Steps Targets to help them work towards these outcomes every day in all school activities. This helps us support and track smaller, simpler steps in progress that contribute to the achievement of their EHCP targets.

Every pupil at Woodlands Meed will have termly Next Steps Targets set for Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Sensory and Physical, and Social Emotional progress. Staff in classes will encourage and support pupils to achieve these, little by little, and record when we see pupils meeting them. When a pupil has completed a target we will celebrate their success, and identify a new target or Next Step to help them meet their short term targets and ultimately, over the longer term, meet the outcomes of their EHCP.

Below is an example of how these are tracked in class, with EHCP outcomes agreed in the long term in Pink, Annual Review Targets agreed for the year in Blue, and Next Steps Targets being worked on day-to-day in Brown. As each Next Step (Brown) is achieved it contributes to the completion of the Annual Review Target (Blue) and in time, the broader EHCP outcomes (Pink). In this way, we can support pupils to gradually work through the long term targets determined in their EHCPs by the Local Authority, and meet the outcomes that support their personal progress as they advance through the school.

Please note, whilst school retain authorship of the Annual Review and Next Steps Targets, Long Term EHCP Outcomes are written by the Local Authority. We can recommend amendments to these targets at Annual Review, but only the Local Authprity can add or amend them. Typically, EHCPs are updated at transition years, or following an additional diagnosis or change in need.
